Should I get a flu shot?
A flu shot does not protect you from bird flu. In healthy individuals flu shots are effective 70-90% of the time, and in unhealthy people they are effective 50-70% of the time. Even then they are only effective against three selected viral strains. These strains change yearly, so the flu shot changes yearly as well.
However, every time your body is fighting any kind of infection, it is more vulnerable to being infected by another agent. The healthier you are the less susceptible you will be to any kind of influenza, including bird flu. For this reason, even if you have been reluctant to do so in the past, you will be less vulnerable if you have a yearly flu shot.
